925-silver is an alloy with 9.25/1000 silver plus 75/1000 of sterling silver. This is an international standard for sterling silver. Nowadays 925-silver is usually plated with platinum to prevent silver from oxidizing or vulcanizing which turns silver yellow black. Therefore, 925-silver without platinum-plating is known as "prime silver."
925-sterling-silver actually refers to the silver products with silver content of 92.5%. 925 represents silver purity, which is the highest purity of silverware, just as the purity of 999-gold. As the full silver (100% sterling silver) is too soft and easy to oxidize, 925-silver has long been internationally recognized as sterling silver.
